Yoga 101: Answers to Your Most Common Questions
Yoga

You have heard of yoga but have never tried. It can be a bit scary going to your first class, especially if you do not know the first thing about it. Here are the most frequently asked questions about yoga answered by a yoga teacher!

I am not flexible; can I do yoga?

Absolutely! You do not need to be flexible to participate in a class. Some poses may be harder than others when first starting out, but practice will help you over time! It is important to note that there are always variations to take, depending on your experience. You do not need to be able to do the splits, or touch your toes in a forward fold, if it feels uncomfortable, bend your knees slightly! It is much more important that you feel comfortable and look after your body, rather than putting yourself in a position of discomfort, or one that could cause an injury. If you have a question, just ask your instructor!

What should I wear to a yoga class?

Wear something that you feel comfortable in. Depending on the class type, you might like to wear loose pants and a t-shirt, or maybe a pair of skins with a singlet. In most classes, people will have on activewear, so wear what you would exercise in. If you were going to do a Bikram (heated) class, I would recommend shorts and singlet or something similar. For a Yin class (that is slower, and you hold the poses for longer), loose long pants with a jumper would be best. Comfort is key!

What should I bring to a yoga class?

  • A yoga mat (if you have one – most yoga studios will have spares, but it is nice to have your own!)
  • A water bottle if you are going to a more intense yoga class or if you get thirsty easily
  • A sweat towel is recommended for a heated flow or Bikram class
  • An open mind – the studio is a place where everyone should feel safe, sometimes you may hear something that does not resonate with you and that’s ok! Just remember to be respectful of others

I would recommend leaving your phone in the car or at home, so you can allow some time just for yourself!

What is the best type of yoga for me?

Here is a list of all the most popular kinds of yoga;

Hatha – probably the most common type in today’s world, hatha works the body and breath together to hold poses for a couple of breaths. Focuses on strengthening the muscles and improving flexibility

Flow – also known as vinyasa, flow is a faster paced practice where poses are held for only about one breath. Whilst still working the muscles, flow is designed to improve flexibility and coordination

Yin – a much slower practice where the poses are held for longer periods of time (2-5 minutes!) and focuses on the connective tissue in the body. If might be less physically demanding, however and be a real test for the mind to try and stay present!

Bikram – a more modern practice where the room is heated to approximately 40 degrees Celsius. The sequence consists of 26 postures and 2 breathing patterns. It can be more of an intense session not necessarily recommended for beginners

What equipment do I need for yoga?

It is important to have your own yoga mat, whether you are attending class or practicing at home. Your mat should feel like a safe space that you can step onto and leave distractions behind.

Other than your mat you do not need to bring your own equipment to class (unless you want to!), if using props, the studio will provide it for you!

If you are looking to expand your practice at home, some props to think about getting are; blocks, a strap, a bolster, a knee pillow, and a blanket.

How often should I practice yoga?

It is completely up to you and your schedule. Whilst some like practicing daily, other might like to attend a class once or twice a week. To fully indulge in the benefits of yoga, both physical and mental, I would recommend 2-3 classes a week, especially if you are just starting your yoga journey!

What are some basic yoga poses for beginners?

Some of the most common poses you would have heard of would be:

*You do not need to know the Sanskrit words or pronunciation! This is just for your information*

Can yoga be practiced during pregnancy?

Yes! Depending what stage you are at in your pregnancy, some poses are not recommended, for example anything laying on your stomach or working the abs. As said earlier, there are always variations to take. It is important to let your instructor know if you are pregnant and how far along you are so they can assist you throughout the practice!

How long does a yoga session last?

Traditional yoga classes run for 90 minutes, however, today, you will find that most yoga classes will run from 45 minutes to 1 hour.

What is savasana?

Savasana occurs at the end of every yoga session in some form. It is silent mediation where participants will lay down on the mat and close their eyes. Traditionally, savasana would go for 10 minutes, however, nowadays, it will usually go for a couple of minutes. It is an opportunity for your mind and body to connect, a final relaxation before class finishes.

Happy yoga-ing!
